How to Hire a Crop-Spraying Drone Operator

A step-by-step checklist for hiring a drone spray operator — credentials, insurance, product, records and the questions to ask before the first flight.

Describe the job clearly

Share the crop and growth stage, total acres or hectares, number of fields, location, terrain, obstacles and the application window. Say whether it is a liquid or dry application and the product category. Note sensitive neighbours — water, dwellings, schools, roads, livestock or apiaries.

Check the right credentials

In the United States a Part 107 remote pilot certificate alone does not authorise agricultural dispensing. Ask for the Part 137 Agricultural Aircraft Operator Certificate, any exemption the operation relies on, the state pesticide applicator licence with the aerial category where required, and any pesticide business licence. Ask for numbers and expiry dates, not just “FAA certified”.

Confirm insurance

Ask for a certificate of insurance and check whether it mentions aerial application and drift, not only general aviation liability. Confirm whether you or your landlord need to be named.

Agree who supplies the product and the records

Decide who buys and supplies the product, and confirm the product label allows the intended use and method. Agree what application record you will receive — date, time, field, product, rate, area covered, weather and a coverage map.

Questions to ask

How many aircraft and pilots will be on site? How many acres can you realistically cover per day for this crop? What is your minimum job size and mobilisation fee? How do you handle weather cancellations? Can we see a sample application record and coverage map from a similar job?
